Each December in Vermont (and throughout the rest of the nation), small teams of birdwatchers track birds throughout the day. We do this for many reasons, but for me, the best part of Christmas Bird count is the occasionally breathtaking moment where something extraordinary happens.
This particular scene is of great meaning to me, as I'd been attempting to photograph snow geese for some time, and I finally had a strong, solid, and close look at them. As they circled around me, I kept turning, trying to take the best photos I could of the group. This one, when the winter light hit them perfectly as they flew across an open field, remains one of the best photos I've ever taken.
